How bout that economy? Do you think this crisis will show up in future literature? What about other, previous economic crisis... what sort of literature croped up from those earlier crisis'?
And, what is the appropriate plural for crisis?

Thoughts to Leave With
I couldn't help stop thinking about the discussion well after we left.
There were some comments that really struck me as insightful and honest, but one theme that seemed to reoccur was how small steps can lead you to places you never intended to go. We know that to achieve any goal, we need to break that goal into small steps. But how often do we wonder, in our own lives, 'How did I get to this place?' and then, and only then, look back at the decisions that led us to that place, that at the time, seemed minor.
It's very easy to look back and see how all the smaller decisions we make in the end are more powerful than any one big decision. I.e. the road to hell is paved with good intentions... How often do we really stop and weigh some of the seemingly innocent decisions we make?
Another comment related to how, 'in the moment' things may seem fine, and it won't be until after, years later, looking back, you could say, 'oh I was so blind' or 'why didn't I see what was right in front of me?"
So what is the difference? Is it willfully looking the other way, or ignorance, a sense of helplessness and powerlessness, or an inability to look around and see the shadows in our lives?

whole lot'a shakin' goin' on
What do you say to two groups with a cap of 16 each - whoever gets in, gets in. It would take some 3rdSats out of their comfort zone, but it would make for smaller groups, maybe have each group read a different book. Now that would shake things up a bit! Would it shake things up that no one would come anymore - is it worth taking the chance and finding out? I think maybe it's something to think about. I get back to you on this one...

Weird August!
August was one of those weird months. This year it had five Saturdays. This was confusing for my book club brain as I kept thinking it was about time for a meeting but then again I knew it wasn't September yet. One way I knew this was because I have a late August birthday which I milked through Labor Day and was aware of every last day of August as I made it my birthday every single day. But the real reason I mention any of this is because I want to thank everyone for their support through emails and the like. Several of you wondered how the 1stSat meeting went, it's still new and everyone hopes, growing, but the meeting hadn't happened yet because it was still August! That fifth Saturday! So I hope to see people there on the 6th, the 1st Saturday of September, and I'll report back that it was a great meeting!
